Chronicle against forgetting

Framework of the memorial chronicle

The memorial chronicle is the result of research carried out as part of the project “Self-determined networking, remembrance and education” (SVEB). In a first step, the memorial landscape relating to right-wing, racist and anti-Semitic violence was examined and memory markers and practices were identified.

In a second step, the biographies and associated forms of remembrance were compiled with the help of the initiatives of those affected. The dates given refer to the respective memorial days; in the case of several dates, the date of death is given regarding those affected.

Further biographies and forms of remembrance are to be added in cooperation with the survivors’ initiatives, the chronicle of fatalities and various research projects. So far, the chronicle can only make a small initial contribution against forgetting, because behind those affected by right-wing violence portrayed here is a never-ending number of people affected by right-wing violence. Since 1990 alone, at least 220 people have been killed by right-wing violence, and the number of unreported cases is likely to be much higher (see chronicle of fatalities). The VBRG provides regular updates on current incidents and their increasing numbers.

All content is agreed with those affected, unless they have developed it themselves. The aim is to focus on remembrance from the perspective of those affected. The memorial chronicle will be an ongoing work-in-progress. Input and comments are welcome – please send a short email to the project team.

Notes on descriptions of violence

This memorial chronicle addresses right-wing, racist and anti-Semitic violence, including specific incidents, backgrounds and consequences. The content may contain incriminating descriptions of violence, discrimination and suffering.

We would therefore like to point out that the acts of violence are described in this memorial chronicle. The descriptions can be found in the individual biographies under the fold-out section “What happened”.

We would also like to point out to those affected and readers that dealing with this content can have a re-traumatising effect. Before accessing the content, please check whether you feel mentally and emotionally able to deal with such topics and, if necessary, do not do so alone.
