Life of Burak Bektaş

Burak Bektaş was born on 14 February 1990 in the former children’s hospital on Mariendorfer Weg. He was the first child of Ahmet and Melek. Two years later, Burak’s brother Fatih was born, followed by Burak’s little sister Melike in 2002.

Burak lived in Weisestraße in Neukölln for the first five years and went to daycare in Treptower Straße. He had a happy childhood, he was always calm, cheerful, a responsible boy with a very big heart. The family then moved to Kiehlufer and Burak moved from the daycare centre to Hans Fallada primary school in Harzer Straße when he was six, in 1996.

From Year 7 to Year 10, he went to Heinrich Heine School, a secondary school in Rütlistraße. He was a very popular boy among his friends, with whom he had already played together in the sandpit. He was a cheerful person and played a lot with his siblings. He loved pushing his sister in her pram.

In 2009, he moved with his parents and his two younger siblings from Kiehlufer to Süd-Neukölln near the hospital on Rudower Straße.

After the 10th grade, he worked as a pizza courier, did an internship at Fiat and then began an apprenticeship as a car salesman in 2010. Burak attended the vocational school in Mitte on Spittelmarkt and travelled to work in Reinickendorf. His life perspective and goal was to build his own design of cars at some point. He wanted to become a hard-working student and technician. He had a small Nissan car and was a very cheerful person. He travelled a lot, back and forth, work, sport and in between he was always going on errands, “Mum, should I go shopping? Shall I bring something?”. Sometimes he went to the 3D cinema on Potsdamer Platz with his sister and her friends. Or he would meet up with his friends. They were always very important to him. They always stuck together. Long-standing friendships. Going out, having fun. He was always open and helpful. Fitness and martial arts were his hobbies. He had been going to Wing Tsun martial arts several times a week for some time.

He was still training on the evening of 5 April before he met up with his friends and a stranger suddenly ended his life.

Forms of remembrance

Shortly after Burak’s murder, his relatives and friends founded the “Campaign group for the Clarification of the Murder of Burak Bektaş” in 2012. Since the murder, this campaign group has been campaigning for the crime to be investigated and for appropriate commemoration. It regularly organises events and rallies to remember Burak and draw attention to the unexplained circumstances of his death. Every year on his birthday (14 February) and the anniversary of his death (5 April), a memorial event and rally is held where family, friends and supporters come together to remember Burak, inform people about current developments and demand justice.

Since 2018, thanks to the tireless work of the campaign group in cooperation with the Bektaş family, a memorial site has been erected opposite Neukölln Hospital on the corner of Rudower Straße and Möwenweg/Laubsängerweg to commemorate Burak Bektaş with the help of donations.

What happened

This memorial chronicle addresses right-wing, racist and anti-Semitic violence, including specific incidents, backgrounds and consequences. The content may contain incriminating descriptions of violence, discrimination and suffering.

The following fold-out section “Description of the offence” describes specific acts of violence. We would therefore like to point out to those affected and readers that dealing with this content can have a re-traumatising effect. Before accessing the content, please check whether you feel mentally and emotionally able to deal with such topics and, if necessary, do not do so alone.

Burak Bektaş was shot dead in front of the Britz hospital in Berlin-Neukölln on the night of 4 to 5 April 2012 at the age of 22. The unknown murderer critically injured Burak’s friends Alex A. and Jamal A. and killed Burak.

The murder of Burak Bektaş and the four attempted murders of his friends have still not been solved. The murder took place just a few months after the NSU complex was exposed, so a NSU copycat offence seems likely. The course of events also points to a racist motive for the murder: a white man arrived, shot at a group of young people with a history of migration and disappeared. The investigating authorities were able to rule out all possible motives for the murder at the beginning of the investigation, except for one: racism.

The Bektaş family and the Campaign Group for the Investigation of the Murder of Burak Bektaş have been fighting for the investigation of the murder and an appropriate memorial since Burak’s violent death.
