Life of Kaloyan Velkov
Kaloyan (born 18 January 1987) came to Germany with his wife and son. The 33-year-old worked as a lorry driver and also helped out in the “La Votre” restaurant on Heumarkt. His wife and son returned to Bulgaria, but Kaloyan stayed in Germany to make a living and continue to support his family in Bulgaria.
Kaloyan brought his mother to live with him. They lived in Erlensee, and Kaloyan’s cousin Vaska and her children, with whom he also spent a lot of time, lived in the apartment below them. Kaloyan’s life consisted of work and sport – he was very happy with that.
Kaloyan never needed many things for his inner happiness; he lived very frugally. He loved to eat, but he only cooked once during his time in Germany, when his brother was visiting. He cooked meat with potatoes in tomato sauce. Everyone’s stomach ached afterwards – not just from all the food, but also from all the laughter that evening.
Vaska spoke to her cousin Kaloyan for the last time on 19 February 2020 at 9:47 pm. They had talked about going to a bar with live music together at the weekend. Kaloyan was dead at 9.57 pm.
Kaloyan’s mother waited several days after his death for him to return. Vaska couldn’t dissuade her, let alone reassure her. In the end, Kaloyan’s mother could no longer stand it in Germany and returned to Bulgaria.
Kaloyan was buried near his family in his hometown of Mesdra. It is a tradition here to bring the dead something to eat or drink when you visit them at the cemetery. Kaloyan’s son brings him his favourite drink.
