Initiative zur Aufklärung des Mordes an Burak Bektaş

Berlin Neukölln

The initiative to investigate the murder of Burak Bektaş sees itself as a platform – in which Burak's family and friends, anti-racist groups, political artists, and activists from various collectives and contexts in Neukölln, people from the neighborhood and committed individuals who live in the district, people from youth work, victim counseling, and research on neo-Nazis — come together to talk, listen to each other, and to take action.

Goals and tasks:

Although we do not know who the perpetrator was, we fear — as long as there is no evidence to the contrary — that this was a racist murder. The murder has created widespread uncertainty on the streets, especially among young migrantized people. In a social climate in Germany where, unfortunately, it is becoming alarmingly clear that the NSU murders are just one example of the professionalization of racist murder, it is all the more important to raise awareness and take a stand against it. That is why we have founded this initiative and will not remain silent until the murder has been solved.

Every year on the anniversary of Burak’s death and birthday, we organize a rally and inform the public about current actions and developments. In 2018, with the help of donations, we were able to create a memorial site for Burak.

Following the murder of Luke Holland on September 20, 2015, in Neukölln, the initiative regularly organizes a memorial service on Luke’s birthday and the anniversary of his death. There are indications that Luke’s murderer may also be Burak’s murderer.

Since the summer of 2022, there has been a parliamentary inquiry committee in Berlin, won through the efforts of those affected and their supporters. Its task is to investigate the investigative procedures related to the series of far-right crimes in the Neukölln district between 2009 and 2021.This includes the murders of Burak and Luke. The initiative is critically monitoring the committee and supporting its public relations work.
