Goals and tasks:
The initiative “München-OEZ-erinnern” (Remember Munich OEZ) has been fighting for appropriate education and remembrance of the crime since 2022. It took too long for such an initiative to be founded, one that works together with relatives and survivors to remember the victims and commemorate the attack. We cannot undo six years of silence. This makes the joint work that has now begun all the more important.
We want to help ensure that the victims are not only remembered on the anniversary, but that they and their stories are part of the public consciousness. We want the relatives’ demands for appropriate commemoration and a space for exchange and reappraisal to become reality. We want to explain why the attack was not recognized as a right-wing terrorist attack for so long. We want to understand why, even after recognition in October 2019, public awareness of this attack has not changed. We want to stand together against racism and right-wing terrorism. We want Munich to take this attack seriously and draw conclusions. We want this attack to be recognized and named as right-wing terrorism nationwide.
We have achieved a lot since we began our work. Relatives and survivors now have a say in how the city’s memorial day on July 22 is organized. Cultural and educational institutions are taking up the issue and organizing events or developing materials in collaboration with relatives and the initiative. We will continue this work and further expand this network of solidarity.
We want to counter the contempt for humanity shown by right-wing terrorism and racism with a practice of solidarity.
