Goals and tasks:
In the same year, a public commemoration event was held for the first time. People from all over Germany who had themselves been affected by racist or anti-Semitic violence came together to show solidarity with the bereaved. Together, they remembered the victims and supported their demands for recognition and justice. Starting in 2020, a memorial event was organized every year at the memorial site at Wanheimer Straße 301 in Duisburg to remember and commemorate the victims of the attack.
The cooperation with the city Duisburg was also an important step. In 2020, a municipal commission consisting of representatives from the administration, the city council, the initiative, and the families affected began its work. The goal was to permanently anchor the memory in the city’s society. On the 39th anniversary of the attack, August 26, 2023, a memorial plaque was finally installed at the memorial site.
In the summer of 2024, the “Duisburg 1984” initiative was dissolved.
